Check out this amazing new line of products that we just picked up this week from local company, Big Cove Foods. The bright packaging is what drew us in, but my-oh-my the flavors and aromas are what will have us coming back for more!
Dave and Sarah, Big Cove Foods owners, have been brightening palettes around Nova Scotia since 2013. They came for a vacation to Nova Scotia, but fell in love with the people and the beauty and decided to stay. It's one of my all-time favorite stories to hear. When people that grew up away from the East Coast are drawn here through family connections (or not) and adventure out and decide to stay. It's just one of those things that just makes me smile. Of course they would want to stay. Nova Scotia is AMAZING! (slightly biased opinion as a born and raised Scotian... but whatever!)
Once they settled, "they started growing their own vegetables and tapping maple trees, while Dave worked at his relatives meat shop to learn different cuts of meat. Living in the country has provided opportunities that living in the city just doesn't have, the farmhouse country living inspired them to dig down to the basics and make things from scratch."
They started selling their products at the New Glasgow Farmers Market, and slowly grew more and more successful beginning with vegetables, syrups and cookies and then their famous Salted Caramel. That lead to spice blends and hot sauces and now selling in retail stores.
"Loving Nova Scotia and all that it provides, they bring you as much local ingredients as possible, some even grown directly from the land. When it comes to Dave's spice blends, he uses great local ingredients and the best herbs and spices from around the world."
I had the great pleasure of visiting their test kitchen last week and had a wonderful visit getting to know Sarah and all their products. I had a really hard time deciding which ones to bring back to Days Gone By for our guests to try, but in the end I selected a good mixture of items and left a few for us to try a little later in the summer season.
FYI: the Salted Caramels pictured here only lasted two days in the bakery and we are sold out already! But don't worry, we will be getting more very soon for you to try.
I drove away from Big Cove Foods so excited! I can't help envisioning us featuring their blends in a dinner special in our restaurant. Be sure to stay tuned for that! But in the meantime, stop by and pick up something new to add to your spice collection! And as Big Cove Foods catch-phrase goes- "Don't forget to eat"
